Best Motherboards for Ryzen 7 3700x 2023

AMD’s Ryzen processors are well-known for their prowess at multi-threaded workloads, the product of the firm’s aggressive tweaking (and some serendipitous timing) with regard to its “Zen” microarchitecture. Much like Intel has released a plethora of Core i7 models since Sandy Bridge in 2011, so too have Best Motherboards for Ryzen 7 3700x processors proliferated into various tiers and price points. And with the launch of AMD’s thoroughly impressive second-generation Ryzen “Pinnacle Ridge” processors, we’re starting to see some truly monstrous performance figures, especially in multi-core workloads via the company’s high-end 12 and 16-core parts. But what about those who simply want to buy a Ryzen processor, and don’t have an obscene amount of money to spend on the high-end parts that AMD is currently pushing.

Enter the Ryzen 7 3700X, a processor that offers eight cores clocked at 3.6GHz (4.4GHz maximum boost) on a 14nm process, but it also totes 50% more cache than its predecessor (an extra 16MB L3) for improved load-balancing and some of the best per-core performance around today. But while AMD’s Ryzen 7 3700X has already taken its position as one of our highest-scoring processors available today, there are also some other compelling options to consider if you’re in the market for an affordable CPU with enough cores to get through your workloads – and we’re looking at both AMD and Intel here, too. We’ve handily compared eight different processors in this price range, all of which are still readily available while stocks last (we’ve given some lengthy consideration to both Ryzen and Intel processors, so you can be sure that even if there’s something AMD or Intel has just released, it will not be included.

Quick Buying Tips!

In our recommendations throughout this article, we’ve simplified four key areas: Memory support , PCIe lanes for graphics cards , PCIe lanes for M.2 and U.2 storage, and pricing.

Memory support:  Any Ryzen processor will be compatible with DDR4 memory, but you’ll get more performance out of faster-clocked RAM. We would recommend at least 2933MHz (our speed of choice) for an 8700K or 3700X system.

PCIe lanes for graphics cards:  You only need a single x16 from the CPU for your GPU, but you’ll want to ensure that there are spare lanes available for other expansion cards. We’ve used a 40 lane chipset as a cut-off here – if the processor has more than 40 PCIe 3.0 lanes available it will be shown as a range (for example, 3700X has 30-60 lanes).

PCIe lanes for M.2 and U.2 storage:  If you’re looking to buy a motherboard with a lot of PCIe lanes, the chipset isn’t guaranteed to have all of them wired out for use by add-in cards. U.2 on the other hand is a fresh new storage protocol that circumvents SATA and runs directly over PCI Express, offering some very fast storage options in MLC NAND flavors via the likes of Intel.

Pricing: We’ve tried to keep pricing as up-to-date as possible, even though it’s prone to fluctuation due to the volatile nature of the CPU market right now. Bear in mind that if you’re looking at buying a new graphics card too, it will impact your overall price for this system – so you may want to pick your parts accordingly.
